“I get up in the morning, torture a typewriter until it screams, then stop.”

Q‑Critiques
Whether a manuscript is nonfiction, literary fiction, science fiction, mystery, memoir, young adult or children’s literature or something else altogether, we have a professional editor to provide a rigorous, detailed critique. Each Q‑Critique has 3 elements:
- Diagnostic Critique
- Q‑Score
- Consultation
Diagnostic Critique
The Diagnostic Critique is a 6-8 page document in which a Q‑Editor carefully examines the deep structure of an author’s work. The editor provides a thorough critical and commercial assessment by evaluating the following elements and various “intangibles” of the manuscript (please note that specialized genres may have other or additional criteria):
- Grammar, Style & Voice
- Characterization
- Narrative Competency
- Dialogue
- Setting & Description
- Plot & Story
- Manuscript Marketability
Q‑Score
1 = Excellent, publishable work. A finished product, the book is engaging and very well written. Few edits are needed. Level 1 manuscripts have been recommended by a Q-Critique editor as being outstanding in their genre. Level 1 manuscripts are presented by the editor to The Queue Advisory Board and may be chosen to be put On Queue.
2 = Good potential but manuscript needs additional work to graduate to Level 1. A typical Level 2 manuscript may have a polished writing style but needs help expanding or improving plot, characterization or other elements. Conversely, the work may have an engaging plot but is wanting in terms of style or technique. Level 2 manuscripts are returned to the author for revision with a recommendation that s/he resubmit within one year for a follow-up evaluation. Level 2 manuscripts receive a 25% discount for re-evaluations.*
3 = Manuscript needs significant work but has possible potential for future acceptance to The Queue’s publication lineup. Editors encourage these writers to improve their technical ability, perhaps with professional guidance. Level 3 manuscripts are returned to the author with an invitation to resubmit within a year at a 15% discount for re-evaluation.*
4 = We recognize enthusiasm and potential in the author but major revisions are needed on plot, characterization, technical and/or other aspects of the work. We do not recommend resubmission of Level 4 manuscripts until significant work has been done. We may recommend additional support via writers’ groups or classes for these writers and are happy to provide information on appropriate resources upon request.
5 = Manuscript has very serious deficiencies or problems in terms of literary quality and/or content. For example, a level 5 manuscript may be overly focused on violence or sex. Although part of life, these things must move a story or have a point. Gratuitous sex or violence often shows serious problems with an author’s vision.
Consultation
Each Q‑Critique includes a 30-minute personal consultation with the editor, usually by telephone. This consultation allows for additional elaboration or clarification of points and analyses made in the diagnostic critique and for any additional questions from the writer.

Q‑Critiques include a “Q‑Score”—an overall evaluation on a numerical scale from 1 to 5.
*Resubmission does not guarantee graduation to Level 1. Manuscripts may be submitted a maximum of three times.
